I recently had someone ask me why we don’t make a bigger deal out of Ordinary Time—that green-colored section of the liturgical calendar meant to signify growth, being faithful disciples, and the ongoing regular life of the church. What a great question! After all, the ordinary times of our lives outnumber the special extraordinary ones. And if every day were a holiday, then they’d cease to be special. The regular and normal every-day nature of our lives might not feel like a big deal. But they are. For even on these seemingly ordinary mundane days on the calendar, we are beloved children of God. What a blessing that is—everyday.

Recently, I have found a tremendous amount of comfort in the book of Ecclesiastes. I have found thoroughly meaningful Qoheleth, the Gatherer, or “The Teacher,” and their insistence that everything is vanity. This word “vanity” or “emptiness” is something we all feel from time to time. I think it’s profoundly human to wonder if what we’re doing has (or if what we did had) any meaning at all. It’s profoundly human to wonder if there’s a point to anything. I led a Bible study on this book in 2025 and the group tried over and over again to shine some positivity into Ecclesiastes. We’re somewhat trained that way, aren’t we? Find the bright spot. Seek out the silver lining.

Blessing and Benediction from Rev. Ivan Herman

As I hiked the trail, I overheard one runner say to another as they passed me: “I’m living too much in the future. I need to stay in the here and now.” I’m not sure if it was exercise or a therapy session. Perhaps both. Was I eavesdropping or just listening to a life lesson meant for me that dropped in unannounced? Perhaps both.
