Blessing and Benediction from Rev. Dr. Andy Kort

by Rev. Dr. Andy Kort

It is late August, the so-called “dog days of summer.” These days are supposedly so hot and so uncomfortable that dogs have to seek the shelter of someplace cool and comfortable. Perhaps many of us are uncomfortable too. The heat, yes, but also because there is so much happening right now in the world and in our lives that causes us to simply seek the shelter of someplace safe and comfortable. The dog days of summer seem to be something that we just tolerate and preserve through until the relief of a better time comes our way.

However, if you have a dog in your home, like I do, then perhaps “dog days” can mean something else too. Our family dog, a boxer named Beatrice, lives up to her name. She is a bringer of joy. She is not just constantly joyful, but also loving, loyal, affectionate, and always quick to welcome us home. She is a delight.

As the summer continues and the heat of the day seems to linger longer than usual, may these “dog days” for you be full of joy, love, affection, and a constant delight in the One who always welcomes us home. And if your days are in need of relief, may God curl up right next to you and give you peace and a hope that a better time may soon come your way. Amen.
