Blessing and Benediction from Rev. Dr. Andy Kort

by Rev. Dr. Andy Kort

The congregation I serve has latched on to the Bible verse Micah 6:8. We have it on a stained-glass window, it is a part of our mission statement, we like to say them in worship, the words hang on a wall in the sanctuary so that when we leave worship, we are reminded of them. If you need a reminder, it states: He has told you, O mortal, what is good, and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God? We often take these words as our directive, and they are. We are to not only remember what is good, but also do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with our God.

Yet I also wonder what it might be like if we were the recipient of these words being enlivened. What if we were treated fairly in all things? What if someone was showed us kindness? If you have ever been mistreated or shown rude behavior, then you might know what I mean. So many times, these important words from Micah call and inspire us to good and faithful work in the world. How wonderful! But sometimes these same people, while quick to do good, are ever so slow to welcome help from others. Perhaps letting our neighbors in the world be kind and gracious to us would lead to the blessing of remembering that we walk humbly with God, yes, but we also walk with one another.
