Blessing and Benediction from Rev. Dr. Andy Kort
by Rev. Dr. Andy Kort
One of the things I love about the Bible is it not only tells the story of God, it also tells our story. Of course, both are intimately intertwined. The human story, which is the story of our lives, is so full and complex. It can take a turn at any moment and the arc of the narrative can seemingly shift and change suddenly and without warning. The story of our lives is indeed the story of our collective lives; and no two stories are the same. James notes this reality. Some are suffering. Some are cheerful. Some are sick and in need of healing. Some are searching for forgiveness. James then points us to Elijah and his experience with prayer. One of Elijah’s prayers was for no rain, while another prayer was for rain. Elijah, also reminding us that the needs, desires, and circumstances of our stories change along the way. James, and Elijah, both pointing us to the power of prayer to the One whom with our stories are intimately intertwined. And as James says, prayer is both powerful and effective.
My hope for you is that you not only remember the intimacy of our union with Christ, but also the power and possibility that comes with prayer. As the old hymn declares, “What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!” So beloved, may you find rain when you need it, and no rain when you don’t. May you find relief from suffering and companions in joy. May you find healing, forgiveness, grace, and peace from the loving God whose story is wrapped up together with ours.
