December 2019 Lectionary Preview: The Gift of God’s Presence
December 2019 lectionary texts are related to presence, or, for the Advent/Christmastide season, we can say they portray God’s present of God’s presence. In other words, God’s gift to us is God’s self. And when God’s self is present, people and things necessarily change.

The Money Conundrum
Today I want to talk with you on one of Jesus’s favorite subjects, money. It’s my sense that we’re not very good when it comes to talking about money in the church. We mention the subject only when we need it or during our once-a-year fundraising effort when we timidly ask for more. Ironically, fundraising and asking for money was not something Jesus talked about. Why then did Jesus talk so much about money? Why did money matter to Jesus?

Law versus grace in stewardship
Recently, I was in a church during stewardship season. The elder of finance was announcing how much the church is short of pledges. It announced to the congregation about cutting staff, reducing the programs if the congregation doesn’t pay their money for the next year. I have heard this so many times.
