Watch the panel discussion\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/ED2_M23k1Nw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Brueggemann,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pcusa.org\/news-storytelling\/news\/2025\/6\/5\/dr-walter-brueggemann-who-published-more-100-books-and-inspired-generations-pastors-and-scholars\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">who wrote more than 100 books and inspired generations of pastors and scholars<\/a>, died June 5 in Traverse City, Michigan, at age 92. In 2003, he concluded his influential and prolific academic career at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, where he taught for 17 years.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Christine Roy Yoder, the seminary\u2019s vice president and dean, moderated a panel that featured:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/philrel.appstate.edu\/faculty-staff\/davis-hankins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">Dr. Davis Hankins<\/a>\u00a0of Appalachian State University<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hendrix.edu\/religion\/religion.aspx?id=48119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">Dr. Robert Williamson<\/a>\u00a0of Hendrix College<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ptsem.edu\/academics\/faculty\/brennan-breed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">Dr. Brennan Breed<\/a>\u00a0of Princeton Theological Seminary<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/vts.edu\/faculty\/the-rev-judy-fentress-williams-ph-d\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams<\/a>\u00a0of Virginia Theological Seminary<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/litpress.org\/Products\/Author\/754409?srsltid=AfmBOookFi6EsCD193__5Jk6GnQV_Hr05K89OS8E2yeWqrucUVX0HcFU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">Dr. Kathleen M. O\u2019Connor<\/a>, professor emerita at Columbia Theological Seminary<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctsnet.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/Bill-Brown-CV-FA23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">Dr. Bill Brown<\/a>\u00a0of Columbia Theological Seminary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cHe would say things like, \u2018the acids of modernity are dissolving your brain,\u201d recalled Williamson, who was Brueggemann\u2019s student and will publish a new book, \u201cReading the Bible with Brueggemann,\u201d next month. \u201cI had no idea what he meant, but it sounded great.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-style-md-wysiwyg\" src=\"https:\/\/pcusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/md_wysiwyg\/public\/2025-09\/Rev.%20Dr.%20Judy%20Fentress-Williams.png.webp?itok=isedygsM\" alt=\"Rev. Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams\" width=\"375\" height=\"241\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Judy Fentress-Williams<\/p><\/div>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-drupal-media align-right\" role=\"group\">\n<article class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-medium\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While attending seminary, \u201cI couldn\u2019t make sense of how what I was learning connected to where I came from,\u201d Fentress-Williams said. Brueggemann\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/work\/quotes\/94307-the-prophetic-imagination\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-once=\"externalLinks\">The Prophetic Imagination<\/a>\u201d \u201cgave me a sense there would be room for me in the academy and as a biblical scholar,\u201d she said. \u201cHere was a guy with a beard and a German name\u201d who \u201copened up some possibilities for me, for which I am grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Brown was a graduate student, Brueggemann put on a Lenten series on the Psalms at a local PC(USA) church. \u201cHe came in and sucked the oxygen out of the room. He had this commanding presence,\u201d Brown said. \u201cI had never witnessed a Bible lecture as performance art before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe invited us to write a lament from the perspective of a Palestinian mother,\u201d Brown recalled. \u201cThat was 40 years ago, and it always stuck with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-drupal-media align-left\" role=\"group\">\n<article class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-small\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-style-small-wysiwyg\" src=\"https:\/\/pcusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/small_wysiwyg\/public\/2025-10\/Dr.%20Robert%20Williamson.jpg.webp?itok=d1tq4YMA\" alt=\"Dr. Robert Williamson\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Robert Williamson<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With his glasses fixed atop his head, Brueggemann would tell his students, \u201cthese glasses are not to correct my vision. These glasses are a pedagogical device,\u201d Williamson said, smiling.<\/p>\n<p>Although Brueggemann was an Old Testament professor, \u201che taught all the disciplines at the seminary,\u201d Hankins said, including pastoral care, New Testament and theology, through the connections he would make during his lectures. Hankins pronounced Brueggemann \u201cprofoundly eloquent. He would take a topic with clear sides and rearrange things so that you decided both sides are wrong and here\u2019s a third way to think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe made us believe the Bible really matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-drupal-media align-right\" role=\"group\">\n<article class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-small\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s obvious this man had an incredible integrative intelligence,\u201d O\u2019Connor said. \u201cWhat he had that the average bear doesn\u2019t have is discipline and devotion.\u201d Normally the first one in the office, Brueggemann would write for 90 minutes every morning, she said.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-style-small-wysiwyg\" src=\"https:\/\/pcusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/small_wysiwyg\/public\/2025-10\/Dr.%20Kathleen%20O%27Connor.jpg.webp?itok=1sr_ihUT\" alt=\"Dr. Kathleen O'Connor\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Kathleen O&#8217;Connor<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI want to celebrate the way he delighted in scripture,\u201d Fentress-Williams said. \u201cScripture is messy and challenging, and it can be a joyous experience. I appreciate the way he had a preacher\u2019s ear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brueggemann \u201ctreated me like we were peers \u2014 me and Brueggemann!\u201d she said. \u201cIt is my prayer that all of us would find the space to be gracious.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-drupal-media align-left\" role=\"group\">\n<article class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-small\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-style-small-wysiwyg\" src=\"https:\/\/pcusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/small_wysiwyg\/public\/2025-10\/Dr.%20Brennan%20Breed.jpg.webp?itok=CLhjh5zD\" alt=\"Dr. Brennan Breed\" width=\"250\" height=\"243\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Brennan Breed<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Breed marveled at how Brueggemann took \u201cvery seriously the historic nature of the text\u201d and noticed where \u201cthere are dissonances in the text.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would say, \u2018I trust this is speaking to our faith,\u2019\u201d Breed said. \u201cGod wants us to be bold enough to speak our mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many years ago, Brueggemann said he aspired to be \u201can agile exegete,\u201d Brown noted. \u201cWalter\u2019s canonical breadth is staggering.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was always pushing familiar themes in new directions,\u201d Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalter always knew who he was writing to and why he was writing to them,\u201d Williamson said. \u201cHe would tell pastors they have the hardest job in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brueggemann said \u201ceverything about everything in the Bible,\u201d Brown said, adding that most Old Testament scholarship in recent decades \u201chas consisted of footnotes to Walter\u2019s work.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-drupal-media align-right\" role=\"group\">\n<article class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-small\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHis words are poetic. There\u2019s a passion behind them that makes them persuasive and compelling,\u201d Brown said. \u201cWalter\u2019s work has made it impossible to do biblical studies without a compassionate concern for people in pain.\u201d<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 220px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-style-small-wysiwyg\" src=\"https:\/\/pcusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/small_wysiwyg\/public\/2025-10\/Dr.%20Bill%20Brown.jpg.webp?itok=PpxemBi8\" alt=\"Dr. Bill Brown\" width=\"210\" height=\"240\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Bill Brown<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Brueggemann did more than put the \u201cso what?\u201d in biblical studies, Brown said. \u201cHe put the prophetic \u2018therefore\u2019 in biblical studies. He championed imagination when it comes to exegesis, and he was doing public theology before it was a thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Audience members asked questions and voiced their own Brueggemann memories once panelists had their say. One question was, how would you want to thank Brueggemann?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"caption caption-drupal-media align-left\" role=\"group\">\n<article class=\"media media--type-image media--view-mode-small\">\n<div class=\"field field--name-field-media-image field--type-image field--label-visually_hidden\">\n<div class=\"field__item\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/article><figcaption><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-style-small-wysiwyg\" src=\"https:\/\/pcusa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/small_wysiwyg\/public\/2025-07\/Rev.%20Dr.%20Davis%20Hankins.jpg.webp?itok=0Fhfo77m\" alt=\"Dr. Davis Hankins\" width=\"250\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Davis Hankins<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor his love,\u201d Hankins said, love \u201cfor the Bible, the Earth and for human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor his contributions to Columbia Seminary. He put it on the world map,\u201d O\u2019Connor said. \u201cHis spirit inspires me to think about hope for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor his courage to say things that were pretty unpopular \u2014 to put them in print and to take the hit for them,\u201d Breed said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would thank Walter for his discipline,\u201d Fentress-Williams said. \u201cWe have this treasure [of his publications] that continues today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Williamson\u2019s upcoming book \u201ctook a long time for me to write,\u201d he said. \u201cI went to Walter to write the foreword.
