Growing Online Giving features ideas and examples to help congregations get the most out of their online giving system. This monthly e-newsletter is designed especially for churches using the Presbyterian Mission Exchange for online giving.

#GivingTuesday, held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, kicks off the holiday giving season and inspires people to give back in impactful ways. According to Giving U.S.A., faith-based organizations have fared well in this one-day online fundraising movement. In 2016, the global mission agency of The United Methodist Church raised almost $854,000 to support missions worldwide. Last year, the Presbyterian Foundation received 166 percent more gifts through its online giving platform on #GivingTuesday, and the amount given was 59 percent higher compared to 2015 gifts. Are you engaging Millennial donors?

Millennials (defined as those born between 1980 and 2000) represent nearly 85 million individuals in the U.S. alone. In a recent survey by researchers at Campbell Rinker for Dunham + Company, a fundraising and marketing consultant that focuses on Christian-oriented charities, more than half of millennial donors indicated they have made a charitable gift online. More than 36 percent indicated the charity’s website was the motivating factor for giving. In addition, the survey found that these young adults were also likely to respond to direct mail. Online Giving Reaches Record High

According to Blackbaud’s 5th Annual Charitable Giving Report, overall charitable giving in the United States increased 1 percent in 2016, with overall online giving growing 7.9 percent compared to 2015. As a percentage of total nonprofit fundraising, online gifts reached a record high in 2016. Faith-based nonprofits saw a growth of 8.8 percent in online giving. Blackbaud also looked at how significant gifts were trending in 2016, and found that 10 percent of gifts of $1,000 were given online. Are you ready to accept online gifts? Read more.

Are you Growing Your Online Gifts?

According to a recently published report in the Chronicle of Philanthropy about online giving trends for 2016, religion-related groups received more than 124,000 gifts totaling $20.3 million. The median gift amount overall was $50. However, the median gift of donors who gave 55 to 59 times during the course of the year was $2,390, more than any other group. Read more.

Make Year-End Giving Easy
