Most pastors find it difficult to preach about money.  There are many reasons for this – we confine money sermons to “stewardship time.” the congregation pays our salaries, we don’t want to want to offend wealthy people, we are sensitive to criticism that, “the church is always asking for money,” and so on.  Our uneasiness is in contrast to bold preaching about generosity in the early centuries of the church.  In this excerpt from his homily on 1 Corinthians 9:1-12, John Chrysostom confronts the congregation with the contrast between its wealth and the plight of the poor. read more

“The Offering” in our order of worship has long been an odd element, a relaxing interlude in the midst of Scripture and proclamation, prayers and sacraments, praise and hymnody.  It is a bit like baseball’s “seventh inning stretch,” a time to relax and listen to the choir while ushers silently pass plates from row to row.  It is a particularly odd element in an age of monthly or even annual giving, on-line giving, and automatic bank withdrawals.  Is there any way to rescue the offering? read more
