Effects of the Spending Formula on Endowment Funds
The Spending Formula is a Total Return Policy adopted by the Foundation. It provides a predictable level of payments to the charitable beneficiary over time while keeping the principal value at or above the level of inflation. This allows us to distribute both income and a portion of the capital appreciation in the endowment fund to today's beneficiaries while preserving the long-term purchasing power of the funds for the future. This formula also dampens significant peaks and valleys the market performance has on payouts - beneficiaries are not as directly tied to the highs and the lows of market performance.
